Biography

My name is Susan Peckford. I obtained my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Lakehead University in 2000 and completed an Honors Diploma in Addictions Counselling in 2001. I then pursued my passion of nursing and completed my Bachelor of Nursing degree in 2004 from Memorial University of Newfoundland, and completed my Masters of Nursing degree also from Memorial University in 2013. I worked in areas such as medicine, surgery, Intensive care, Emergency, and mental health units. I also worked as an educator at the Western Regional School of Nursing. I became involved in wound care in 2009 when I accepted a wound care clinical nurse specialist position and I then began my CAET program education and graduated from the CAET 2012. I completed my Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) certification in Wound, Ostomy and Continence and became WOCC certified in 2018. I am currently the Regional Clinical Nurse Specialist in Wound, Ostomy and Continence for the Western Health Authority in Newfoundland. This region covers approximately 80000 patients, and I am the only NSWOC nurse in our region. I practice both ostomy and wound care providing coverage for the region. I enjoy research, policy creation and hands on patient care, inpatient education and running a busy outpatient clinic. I spend much of my time working on Pressure Injury Prevention and Management initiatives and presented work on this topic at the 3rd Nursing World Conference in Rome, Italy in 2018. I continue to work on this initiative. I also work part-time as an academic adviser with the Wound Ostomy and Continence Institute and cover both Wound Management and Ostomy management courses.
